Pascale Massot is an [associate professor](https://pascalemassot.com/) in the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa. She is also [John H. McArthur Fellow](https://cast.asiapacific.ca/about-us/senior-fellow-non-resident/pascale-massot) at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in Vancouver, [non-resident Honorary Fellow](https://asiasociety.org/policy-institute/pascale-massot), Political Economy at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis in New York, a [Canadian Global Affairs Institute Fellow](https://www.cgai.ca/pascale_massot) and a Non-resident Fellow, [Center for China Analysis](https://www.ntuccs.org/), National Taiwan University. Dr. Massot is the author of *China’s Vulnerability Paradox: How the World’s Largest Consumer Transformed Global Commodity Markets* ([Oxford University Press, 2024](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/chinas-vulnerability-paradox-9780197771402?lang=en&cc=ca)) – Winner of the 2025 [Best Book Award in International Political Economy](https://www.isanet.org/Programs/Awards/IPE-Best-Book) from the International Studies Association and the 2025 [Peter Katzenstein Book Prize](https://government.cornell.edu/peter-katzenstein-book-prize). She was full-time senior adviser for China and Asia to various Canadian Cabinet ministers from 2015-2017 and 2020-2021, and a member of the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs’ Indo-Pacific Advisory Committee in 2022. As John H. McArthur Fellow at the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada, she helped launch the [Critical Minerals Hub](https://www.asiapacific.ca/programs/emerging-issues/critical-minerals), as well as launch and co-host the [Minerals Matter](https://www.asiapacific.ca/podcast/minerals-matter) podcast series.

She was a Taiwan fellow and visiting professor at the Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies (GIEAS), National Chengchi University (NCCU), a visiting scholar at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, a visiting PhD candidate at Peking University’s Center for International Political Economy and a Cadieux-Léger Fellow at Global Affairs Canada. Her research interests include the global political economy of China’s rise, China’s impact on global extractive commodity markets—including debates around de-risking, critical minerals and economic security, Canada-China relations, U.S.-China strategic competition, China narratives, and the advent of Indo-Pacific strategies around the world. She received her Ph.D. in political science from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
