Michael Shurkin is a senior political Scientist at the RAND Corporation. He does work on West African security as well as U.S. and European strategy, doctrine, force structure and management, security assistance, and defense institution building. Shurkin has particular expertise in Africa’s Sahel region and French military operations. He previously worked in the Intelligence Community, where he served as a political analyst with a focus on West Africa and Afghanistan. Prior to that he was a lecturer in the history department at Johns Hopkins University.
