Presentation
The Network for Strategic Analysis (NSA) is organizing a summer school on computational text analysis methods in the field of security and defense. The goal of the summer school is to train a new generation of researchers on computer-assisted text analysis to develop their capacity to process vast quantities of texts on security and defense issues. Specifically, the summer school will train students in the collection, management, analysis, and visualization of textual data. To do this, the training will employ R and Python software.
The course will develop these skills in relation to a specific research problem: the war in Ukraine, which is causing great tension in the international community. Students will be asked to examine the nature of perceptions, within a country of their choice, of the war in Ukraine, to identify dominant frames and the degree of internal contestation. The work of the summer school will culminate in a collective work that will allow for the comparison of research findings and enrich our understanding of the ongoing fragmentation of the liberal international order.
The summer school offers students the opportunity to deepen their empirical and methodological knowledge of these issues. It is also an excellent opportunity for knowledge sharing and networking within the NSA.
Preliminary Programming
- Day 1: Data collection
- Day 2: Data labeling
- Day 3: Data processing and computational modeling
- Day 4: Data analysis
Eligibility
This intensive training is offered to a small group of students to provide individualized support and personalized learning. Students working under the supervision of one of the members of the Strategic Analysis Network are eligible. No experience is necessary; knowledge of R or Python is not a prerequisite.
The training will be conducted in French and English, so a good knowledge of both languages is required.
Application deadline: May 24, 2023
Please submit your application, by May 24, 2023, to info@ras-nsa.ca with the subject line Summer School and copied to the NSA expert supervising your studies, with the following two documents attached:
- Curriculum vitae: previous training, research experience, methodological skills, etc.;
- Letter of motivation: why attend the NSA Summer School?
We encourage applications from Indigenous people, people of color, LGBTQ2I and people with disabilities. We promote equity and encourage you to indicate in the application if you belong to one of the designated groups. Only successful applicants will be contacted.
